On IQ, Happiness, and Outliers

Matt is an endless source of new information, which is one of the reasons I love him (that, and he's dreamy and sooo good at french kissing).

He recently brought to my attention a study that explains using delayed gratification to raise a child with a higher IQ. With nature and nurture being equally important in determining intellectual and behavioral outcomes, I can't shake this article on finding happiness out of my mind.

I know these are limited sources and fragments of thought, but it's born the question: If we are able to control our lives with positive thought and delayed gratification, why does it seem that so many people choose to suffer? Or why have we been unable to enable ourselves?
